The Man Who Can Do It All

For the second action project of my Journalism class, we were asked to pick someone from the 20th century, that we thought had a powerful voice. This person could be alive or dead. I chose Will Smith because I believe that his music is very underrated and his acting career overshadowed his musical talent. We were also asked to focus on radio-journalism so we used podcasts to portray our message. Although. the podcast did take a long time to complete, I think I'm pretty satisfied with the result. We were also required to create a script. This was not a easy task, but I was up for the challenge. I liked this project because it allowed me to use the creative bone in my body. Anything that allows me to be creative, I'm usually open to, and I opened up to this project and exposed myself to new things. I would suggest this project as a leisure type of thing to do because it's very relaxing and you can get your creative juices flowing while learning more about your favorite people in the world.

I feel like Will Smith is prominently known for his acting career, and a lot of people call him a sell out because he didn’t continue rap. Was it for a pay check? Or was Will’s passion for acting stronger than his passion for music? Nevertheless, Will Smith has produced quite a lot of quality music and has made many movies a worth-while watch! Today I will be telling you guys, just how important Will Smith is to me, as a teenager. Will: There's no need to argue, Parents Just Don't Understand. Me: We have Nick here on SEAN RIVERS radio. Hey Nick, how you doing? Nick: Good, you? Me: I'm doing great. I just had a few questions for you. Of course we're here to talk about Will Smith and how important he was to us as teenagers, we are growing up now. In the 80s he was a rapper though, why is he important to you? Nick: He's important to me because I feel like his music resonated with me a lot and the way he tried to make it so relatable to the everyday teenager and that kind of stuff and how he was on Fresh Prince and his acting career and all of it was just so great and seeing him progress in that kind of way. The Fresh Prince: Mom what are ya doing, you'll ruin my rep. She said you're only 16, you don't have a rep yet. Me: Have you ever went to school in an outfit that your parents forced you to wear? Example? Nick: Not exactly a full outfit, but I remember my mom bought me these horrible pants and she made me wear them because she loved them (The Fresh Prince: she said if they were laughing, you don't need 'em cuz they're not good friends) so much and she got them at such a cheap price that I was forced to wear them, even though I hated them and it did not go with my style of the day at all. Me: I know how that feels! The Fresh Prince: You go to school to learn, not for a fashion show. Me: Has your mom ever yelled at you for something really minor? Nick: Oh, all the time, like of course. I feel like that's something that all parents do at some point. Me: Well, you ever do something and get into a lot of trouble with your parents? Nick: I have before. I remember I was playing with Nerf guns or something and I shot it at my dad and he all of a sudden got so angry at me. He stood up and started yelling at me. I didn't even do anything that much. It's crazy because parents, they just don't get it sometimes. The Fresh Prince: That was a hard ride home, I don't know how I survived it. They took turns, one was beating me while the other one was driving. Me: Thank you Nick, for coming on SEAN RIVERS radio. Nick: Thanks for having me, man! Me: Will Smith, born on September 25th, 1968, was an inspiration and voice of the teens. I love to watch his growth as an actor and I’m very happy I get to listen to his older raps because it helps me through my teenage years! Those parents tho….. Do Results Overshadow Intentions?

In our third, and last unit, we discussed what a matriarch is and who could be described as a matriarch in our lives. The term matriarch is commonly used to describe someone who is very mentally strong, or positively cruel; meaning when you care about others so much, you are a bit hard on them, so they're ready for the real world. They can also be described as old/wise, or selfless. We read A Raisin In The Sun, highlighting a character, Mama as the matriarch of the story. She is wise, old, and quite selfless. For our Action Project, we chose from a specific scene of A Raisin In The Sun and followed a main character of that scene through the story. We identified glory, their downfall, and the consequences of his actions. We commented on the character's different moments by writing commentary in the form of a Greek chorus. I chose the character of Walter because of his commitment to family and his love for being in charge. In my Action Project, I chose to address the issue of blockbusting, that started in the 1940s and still takes place in different ways today. My chorus is ultimately highlighting Walter as a man of love and family, and defending him in losing the $6500 that Mama gave to him. The story will be explained below...

Modern Day Historic Conversation

For the second Unit of my "Drama" class, we studied how people view women as "dolls" and how some women or men have stood up to "gender roles" through theater. Throughout this unit, we have read and discussed all of two play writes: "A Doll's House" and "The Little Foxes." In both plays, there was a woman or man who brought upon stereotypes of how women "should" play their role in a relationship. My peers and I, also attended a play about Marie Antoinette and discussed how she follows the expectations of "gender roles." For our action project, we had to create a script for a conversation that we would have with a character from A Doll's House. We also had to choose a female historic figure to add to our conversation, and I chose Hera, the queen of all gods and goddess. I chose Hera because she would be very interesting in explaining the role of women as she has ruled her whole life. My conversation sets in Hera's palace, with special guest "Zan" from Little Foxes, as we discuss how the world has changed as our generations have past.

Bon Appétit! Or Not? - Future Global Hunger

In my third and final action project this term, for the third unit, "IF/THEN," we looked at the world population and what problems could emerge from overpopulation. Population is more than a number. It changes every second. Someone dies or is born every second of the day, and I have failed to realize this. This project focuses more on the downside to high populations. It is actually interesting to see how different people think there is going to be problems with high populations and some think the same thing, but for different reasons. 

My class and I calculated the World Population in 2050. We used geometric sequences and the current world population to determine the world population in 36 years. Our work is shown below:

For our project, we wrote a script to inform other teenagers about the problems associated with 

population growth. The script is for an animated cartoon that will be put on social media sites.


[Dillan and Savannah sit outside on a picnic blanket, talking about life]


Dillan: I’ve been waiting for this moment for a while Vannah, haha.


Savannah: Haha, all you had to do was ask! This is really nice by the way.


Dillan: Thanks, it didn’t take too long, just made some sandwiches and stuff. It was actually kind of fun, since I was excited you finally said yes…


S: But Dillan… this is the first time you asked.


D: ...but anyways I used so many different recipes, trying to get all this food made correctly. My garbage had a bad stench because of all the food that was in there!


S: But Dillan you know there’s millions of people around the world that are starving because they can’t afford food to feed themselves and their family.


D: ...Vannah, that’s silly, we both know that people are hungry because the population is increasing and food is becoming scarce because we can’t produce enough!


S: No, hunger, poverty, and food prices are linked. Almost all hungry people are poor.


D: ..well--


S: Millions live with hunger because they simply cannot afford nutritious food.


D: ..I see, but--


S: And also the world produces 17% more food per person today than 30 years ago. But almost a billion people go to sleep hungry every night!


D: ..Vann--


S: Plus we already grow enough food for 10 billion people. And our world population is 7 billion. Now what did you have to say? 

D: Nothing anymore. Wow, Vannah I wasn't aware!

S: Yea, there's a lot of things we may not be aware of.

D: So you want to just go grab some food from the garbage? 

S: I never said that! Haha
